More draft talk Jan06 '03

I have some more things I want to say about the politicians who are trying to reinstate the draft.

Today’s Chicago Tribune had a couple articles on the topic, as if on cue from my entry last night.

They brought up the interesting aspect that if men should be drafted, why not women? If women cry foul, then they are only admitting they are inferior to their male counterparts, and are not strong enough to help out their country. Isn’t that exactly the opposite of what women are trying to prove these days? They are trying to prove that they are the same as, or better than men. So a universally equal draft would make sense.

Then you have the problem of draft dodgers. In the case of men, it’s kind of hard to dodge, but women – well, the most popular draft dodger would be pregnancy. Would women go out and deliberately get pregnant to avoid going to war? Does our country want to deal with that strange and possibly dangerous scenerio?

If we reinstate the draft, we’d be doing something far different than we did in the 60’s. Today, we would be waging a war of the sexes. Who’s the wiser?
