RSS search agent Feb28 '05

RSS feeds of specific sites are great – but I prefer RSS feeds, as the result of a search.

Let’s say I am interested in Blog A, because Blog A discusses the topic, Topic A.

I subscribe to Blog A’s RSS feed, so I can stay informed with Topic A, from Blog A, without always having to visit the site, to check for updates.

Since I am very interested in Topic A, I also decide to subscribe to an RSS feed of a general search for Topic A, across numerous sites (perhaps hundreds or thousands). This way, I not only find information relevent to Topic A, I also don’t limit myself to just ONE SITE (Blog A) discussing Topic A.

Essentially, I am requesting information on anyone, anywhere, discussing Topic A.

Interests change

I appreciate Blog A’s insight on Topic A – however, I am weary of the days where I have to read off–post topics, about things that interest the author of Blog A (but may not necessarily interest/affect me).

What may interest the author of Blog A, may not interest me, at the current time, so why should I read something, unless it pertains to my interests?

My interests are always changing. All of a sudden, Topic B grabs my attention.

With my general search RSS feed, I can simply change my keyword to Topic B, and instantly I have unlimited results on Topic B.

I can still stay subscribed to Topic A, and as you can see, I am beginning to develop a list of search terms for MYSELF. In a sense, these "personal search terms" are my meta tags. They describe my personal interests at the current moment. They can change or be replaced at any given time.

More efficient use of information

By supplying up to the minute keywords for myself, I am using my time more wisely. Searches that pertain to my interest are being fed to me, instead of me having to search for my interests myself.

In a way, my "RSS search" feed acts as my agent. It knows what I am looking for (the keywords I supply), and it goes out and finds that information.

In the same sense, my agent will also know what I have to offer to anyone else searching. My agent will know if I can be of value.
