Email signatures Apr02 '05

I’ve never really been a big user of email signatures.

No matter how many times I set one up, I always find myself deleting it, right before I send an email.

The reason?

Sometimes I think it’s too much information; other times I think it’s not enough information.

I can never seem to find the right balance.

Signature formats

Although many common email signature formats exist, there are two that I have set up often, in the past.

Full name and phone number

This is a simple, two–line signature, with a wide variety of uses:

Matt Thommes
(123) 456–7890

For the casual email to a friend, this signature is not too much information.

On the other hand, it provides sufficient information, for a more formal/business email.

Nickname, full name, email/web address, quote

Another popular email signature involves a more "personal touch."

Matthom (Matt Thommes)

(123) 456-7890

Be everywhere. Read Everything. Say Thank You. What are you thinking of next?

This signature shows off your "techno savvy" (email and web address), as well as providing a personal quote at the end.

This signature is great for formal/business emails, where you need to include a professional signature, with lots of information.

Not good enough

Although both of these types of email signatures are useful in certain situations, I can never seem to use either one.

I always find that email, as informal as it is, is never formal enough to have a professional signature included.
