Cell phone driving directions Apr12 '05

I’ve been waiting patiently for driving directions from a cell phone.

I really don’t know why it took so long to have this service available.

It’s the most obvious need I can think of.

It makes more sense to have access to driving directions from a cell phone – which you have in the car, while you’re driving, rather than solely from a computer, which you leave at your house.

Google announced this today.

So when you’re driving, and you’re not sure exactly how to get somewhere – simply text message Google SMS, which is the number 46645.

Within seconds, a text message will be sent back to you – with detailed driving directions.

For example:

123 S. Main ST, Miami, FL to 344 N. Wilke ST, Charleston, SC

Make sure to include the "to" between each address, otherwise it won’t work.

Saving part of your directions

As many of you may agree, typing messages on cell phones can often be cumbersome, due to the small buttons, and lack of natural keyboard typing.

It’s probably wise to save part of your direction request, so you don’t have to re–type it each time.

If your cell phone or portable device allows you to save text message "templates," you can simply include the starting address in the template, since you will rarely know what the destination address would be:

123 S. Main ST, Miami, FL to

When you need directions from this address (which is a fake address, by the way), you can simply call up this template, and append the destination address after the word "to."

This, at least, saves you some typing.
