Ruby on Rails May19 '05
Lately, I’ve been (and this is a huge understatement) extremely intrigued by the emerging programming language, called Ruby.
Written in Ruby, Rails is a type of open–source web framework, for writing web applications.
So, the phrase "Ruby on Rails" has been swiftly spreading through web communities everywhere.
My Java days
I have had some (although minimal) experience working with a framework similar to Rails. I did some JSP development in early 2004.
Coming from a PHP background, JSP was extremely confusing and disorienting. I felt like I was brand new to programming and web development, with all the complex hierarchies and levels of development involved.
The best of both worlds?
From what I have read, Ruby is similar to Java (and JSP), but also very similar to PHP. Perhaps it’s the "best of both worlds?" I’m not sure.
All I can do is absorb as much information on the subject as I can find.
Web hosting support for Ruby
After learning how great a language Ruby is, my next inclination was to see if my current hosting provider, Dreamhost, supported it.
This, from the Dreamhost Knowledge Base:
Ruby on Rails is a very interesting technology that we may support some day but at this moment we do not support it officially.
Last updated: Apr 24, 2005.
TextDrive is the official Ruby On Rails web hosting provider, and I’m sure more hosting providers will start to support it, in the near future.
Other Ruby resources
Rubyonrails.com is the official site for "Ruby on Rails." The site looks strikingly similar to the Firefox home page (on a completely off–note).
Basecamp was also one of the first major web applications to be fully developed in Ruby.
