Starbucks and Mobil: it’s all about image May31 '05

Bananas at Starbucks

I’ve been intrigued lately with Starbucks latest idea to start selling bananas at their cash registers. This is happening in Chicago, but I’m not sure about other cities.

Why bananas??

I mean, sure, they sell CD’s, and some other off–topic items... but bananas!??

And the sheer fact that people are buying them like crazy, makes the whole idea more intriguing to me. (Despite the fact that you can get bananas at your local Osco for much cheaper.)

This past Sunday, I took a stroll around Westfield Shopping Mall (aka Old Orchard), in order to pick up Shell’s new iPod.

I noticed a Starbucks at the mall, and I ran up to the window to see the bananas in action. Sure enough, they were right next to the cash registers. I smiled stupidly – like a kid thinking he just solved the world’s greatest puzzle.

As much as I cringe at corporate overload, I love the culture of Starbucks, and other such places.

Steer past Mobil

To remain on the whole "image" topic – I typically never go to Mobil gas stations.

Mobil needs to work on their image.

With all due respect, gas is gas. It makes your car go vroom. But for some odd reason, whenever I see a Mobil gas station, I steer right past it – even if my tank is darn near empty.

Why, you wonder?

Their image sucks. I can’t relate to them.

I’d rather go to the BP, across the street, who is selling gas for 20 cents more a gallon, than to a Mobil gas station.

And BP used to be Amoco, whom I felt detached from as well!

But ever since Amoco re–did their image, and became BP – all of a sudden, I like them a lot!

BP’s image rules! I feel connected to them, and I enjoy filling my tank at their pumps. (uuuuum)

BP has a nice, clean, earthy image.

Mobil feels like someplace my Grandpa goes to.
