Excitement from the ballpark Jun15 '05
Last night’s Cubs game was one of the best games I’ve ever attended.
Not only did I get my first "bleacher experience," the Cubs pounded the Marlins, by a score of 14–0, and a young pitcher named Sergio Mitre finally made his presence known to the world.
The $100 homerun
We were standing along the fence, in right/center field, and in the fourth inning, Aramis Ramirez hit a deep drive, right at us.
I watched the ball sail all the way to a spot on the fence, directly above where my head was. It was only a foot short of leaving the ballpark entirely, and landing onto Waveland Avenue.
I don’t know why I didn’t attempt to catch it. It all happened so fast.
With the ensuing, frantic scramble occuring all around us, I managed to spill my entire beer, and completely lose track of where the ball went.
Apparently, the ball rolled on the ground for a bit, and some fellow picked it up. This guy had just been passing by, with hot dogs and beer in his hands. He hadn’t been standing in that spot, all game, like we were.
And he didn’t spill his beer or food, like I did.
So, in my opinion, he wasn’t deserving of the homerun ball.
It was at that point that I punched him in the face, and took the ball.
Just kidding.
Actually, I "high–fived" him, just like everyone else was doing.
Then... a fellow who had been standing next to us earlier, pulled out some bills, and said to the guy holding the homerun ball:
I’ll give you $100 for that ball.
And he flipped out a $100 bill. The fellow with the ball didn’t hesitate for a second. He snatched that $100 bill, without a second thought.
The gentleman who paid for the ball told us it was for his "two year old" son, whom I’m sure would appreciate a $100 ball. (sarcasm)
Still, I can’t justify dropping $100, just like that. I guess he had money to waste.
Ronnie "Woo Woo"
We also had the opportunity to meet Ronnie "Woo Woo", who is a very popular, and long–time Cubs fan.
My Dad snapped a picture of Ronnie, with my sister Laura:
