Send SMS with a browser? Isn’t that email? Aug05 '05

I came across Google Send to Phone for Firefox, and I began to wonder what the deal is with sending SMS messages from a browser.

Aren’t we just merging the line here?

Personally, I can’t even clearly see the distinction between a "plain text" SMS message, and a "plain text" email message.

To me, they’re pretty much the same thing - which is a text message sent from one client (or device) to another client (or device). A cell phone is no different than a computer. Both are able to send and receive data.

And, cell phones are getting so advanced, they might as well be considered "mini computers," with all the features they offer, and the memory they can store. Aside from the small screen, cell phones and computers are almost identical.

So, why the distinction?

If anything, SMS will eventually become more like email, where you can send attachments, HTML email, etc.

So, really, SMS is just email, at a very early stage.

And, why would I want to send an SMS message from a browser, if I can just email something to a cell phone?

I guess I am running in circles here...
