A Thursday in August Aug11 '05

Sometimes my job gets too be too much. Some days are harder than others.

I am a morning person, so by 3 PM, I have worn myself out. And by Thursday, I am wishing the week was over.

Doing web development, no matter how much I think I enjoy it - certainly has it’s dry moments.

There’s only so much technical jargon I can read, control, manipulate - and whatever else you want to call it. It’s all the same. It all requires use of the same part of the brain.

The human brain is really strange. The brain will do anything to avoid not having anything to do. I suppose that’s why humans excel - because their brains won’t settle for anything else. After all, who, but humans, created skyscrapers, complex scientific equations, and the ability to travel to other planets?

Humans are remarkable entities.

In any case, I’ve noticed that when I sketch, I lose focus on my surroundings, and my mind feels at ease. I think sketching (or anything creative) uses a different part of the brain, than doing technical things, like web development.

There are many different parts of the brain - as eating, sleeping, sex, exercising, and listening to music all use different parts of the brain as well.

Sometimes we use other parts of the brain as a form of "coping," or therapy. For example, if I am so exhausted with technical web development - I try to sketch.

In the end, the "coping" only seems to make us feel better temporarily. The mind can’t be played tricks upon. It knows better.

The mind is very stubborn. Once it get’s into a funk, it wants to stay there, as long as it can. And one part of our mind fights against the other part that is stubborn. We fight for inspiration, and we fight for a sense of "purpose."

Sooner, or later, it hits us. We don’t know where it comes from, or how it gets here, but it always finds a way. And then we are ourselves again.

Sometimes I fear that it won’t come. Sometimes I fear that it won’t stay.
