WordPress is not for me Aug17 '05
I use WordPress on a some temporary sites, because sometimes I’m not overly concerned with the underlying code, the appearance, or much else. Sometimes, I just need something quick, where I can instantly start adding content, without much set-up.
To date, this is the only useful purpose I’ve had for WordPress. That is, quick, instant sites - with easy admin access, and very little development time.
I’ve tried "getting my hands dirty" with WordPress code, templates, and all that - but so much of it is already "set in stone," I find it hard to customize - and keep that customization over a long period of time.
Upgrade issues
I recently upgraded a WordPress site to version 1.5.2.
Now all my subtle CSS and XHTML changes are completely gone. The appearance has "time warped" back to the very original style sheet, leaving my changes in the dust, like they never happened.
Sure, I have all my styles saved in a CSS file, but what about all my structural XHTML changes?
How could I have preserved all that?
I just don’t get it
Maybe I just don’t get it, when it comes to WordPress.
I mean, the very first step in the upgrade instructions said to delete all of your WordPress files, save for maybe one file, and one folder. And then, upload all the new files to the same place.
Is there something wrong with that picture?
I just don’t like deleting anything.
I don’t really understand why anyone would want to develop a site with pre-customized templates and appearance. I’d much rather create a site by hand, step by step - and not be locked into some "system," which can cause me to upgrade at any given time, and be forced to use all new code - despite all my previous changes.
This is, of course, my opinion. There are many people who can really manipulate WordPress, to suit their tastes and design style. Many people are really good at controlling WordPress, and not having WordPress control them.
I am just not one of those people.
