Remote scripting, PHP, Terry Chay Sep30 '05
If you’re interested in learning how to start using remote-scripting (aka AJAX), in combination with PHP, Terry Chay has made available an excellent video on the topic.
The video is of Terry talking at OSCON, earlier this year, and it is about a 45 minute panel. Terry includes a detailed slide presentation, which is viewable in the movie, as well.
Terry discusses the positives and negatives of implementing remote-scripting in today’s browsers. He makes some very good comparisons to current AJAX applications - such as Google Maps, Suggest, and Gmail. He also discusses situations where it’s best not to use AJAX, such as the star rating system at Netflix. He also points out how AJAX applications are similar to Flash - in that they "subtract" some browser features that people have come to rely on - such as the "Back" button, "permalinks," and print features.
The discussion is "loose" and "laid back," as Terry is not afraid to openly bash Microsoft, or use profanity when expressing a point.
This informative panel is a must-see for those intrigued by the "uproar" of AJAX.

I originally tried viewing it on Windows 2000 - but the video didn’t show up - I just had the audio. On Mac OS X, it worked fine. Perhaps I just need to update my Quicktime version on Windows.
