Grand Sunday night at Wrigley Apr10 '06

For a brief moment, I couldn’t hear anything. The sudden surge of screams came from all around.

It all happened so fast. I’m not even sure what I was seeing, but I was sure of the "little white pill" traveling further and further away from the baseball diamond, and out into the long, reaching arms of fans, in the bleachers.

What just happened?

Had Michael Barrett just hit a grand slam, when the Cubs needed it most? The first grand slam of the season? On the first night game of the season?

Had the Cubs just went up 7-4, in the final game of the series - with a great chance to "sweep" their rival Cardinals?

I turned to my right, to a group of Cardinals fans, who previously, we’re pretty confident in their team’s chances to win this one. They just stood there, and stared "blankly" at the field. It was like telling someone their best friend had just passed.

I kind of felt bad for the "nice" Cardinal fans - the ones who just watched the game, and didn’t get obnoxious. But for the ones who were obnoxious throughout - well... that felt pretty damn good to see their reaction to that grand slam.

To make things even more interesting (or scary, depending on how you look at it), "karma" was on our side.

Michelle... prior that "grand slam" inning even starting, had mentioned how she had never seen a "grand slam" happen at Wrigley, or anywhere. I told her she must have seen one, at some point. But, no. She was sure she never saw one.

And then it happened. Can you say weird?

Also, although Michael Barrett’s grand slam takes the spotlight - let’s not forget Jacque Jones’ very first hit of 2006 - a three-run homerun to the center-field stands.

Way to make an entrance, Jacque. He was due for that.
