Latest updates from me Apr20 '06

Things have been very bumpy for me, lately.

For one - I still don’t have my Mac working properly. In fact, it’s not working at all.

This may not seem like such a big deal, to some - and, in fact, I am using Michelle’s G4 laptop, for the "time being," until I get my Mac fixed. So it’s not like I’m without a computer, at home.

But it’s still a big deal, because along with losing my Mac, I also lost my inspiration.

Not entirely, no. But without that environment that I’ve grown accostomed to using - the speed, the software, etc - I’m a guy full of ideas, and nowhere to "channel" them.

Michelle’s laptop is great - and I appreciate her letting me use it, but it’s not quite the same. Some software is missing (Photoshop CS2), which I rely on for daily tasks, and I’m really not a big fan of the PowerBook’s wide screens.

Don’t get me wrong. I like large computer screens, but I like my moniter to be as tall as it is wide. I don’t like it being just wide.

It makes more sense if I draw it out.

Here’s how the PowerBook screens are:

This is great for watching movies, but for general computer work, I really don’t like it. It doesn’t feel natural. It’s too wide.

Here’s how I like it:

Now... this doesn’t have to be necessarily larger - it just needs to be more proportional.

This is how my Apple Cinema Display is.

Anyway... enough about that. The point is... without my Mac, I’m feeling lost, lately, and it effects how many blog posts I make, and how "active" I am in the web community.

Also, at work, I’ve suddenly become the database and web server administrator. A young man, who has been with this company for five years, has decided to leave, and now I’m in charge. (of the web sites and databases, that is.)

It used to be he was the main guy, and I was the "understudy," if you will, but now I have to step up, and take full control. (All this really means is that if something terrible goes wrong, I’m the one that has to fix it, and I better be able to fix it.)

This is a great opportunity, and I’m very happy.

But I’m also very nervous. I don’t know a whole lot about networking and database administration (from the hardware side). These things I have to learn.

At the same time, I still have to maintain the internal web sites, assist with user issues, and administer certain sofware packages that are used throughout the company.

It’s a "whole new ballgame" for me. I’m excited, but cautious.

As things get settled from my end, expect to see more posts here, and more articles at PITT.
