I totally agree with you....music management is sometimes not worth the trouble. Although I have not had any problems with my iPod, I find that with a library of over 4500 songs, it’s very cumbersome, and almost boring to sit there and switch the music out every few days. Even with smartlists and playlists, its still too much. I’m finding that I don’t even know what I have anymore!

I hear ya, Dale... and many people may think I’m "acting out of anger," here, but I’ve thought it through, and I am comfortable with my decision.
It has just become more about "technology," than music.
Perhaps I am just being naive, and perhaps will return to digital music files soon - but for now, I’m just enjoying the "change of pace."

Screw CD’s "Teens like Vinyl..." according to this article linked to from digg the other day.
In the early days of MP3, many people said that hard drives were not a suitable medium for active use. Solid state storage is much better, but obviously, very expensive. Most people are easily convinced otherwise however, when they jog "once or twice" and "it works"--but they often don’t consider long term quality issues.
iPods have always been, and are still greatly overpriced though. I bought the Creative Zen MP3 player, much uglier and clunkier, but it still works (for car and desk use), and I paid HALF as much as the competing 20GB iPod at the time.

I’ve stopped using my iPod and iTunes, for very good reasons.

I take it you’ve done a proper reset of the device and done a restore of the firmware? I also suggest you recharge your ipod through the mains power adapter.
Although I don’t understand how you can expect something to last a life time, nothing does.
You’ll soon realise how much a pain storing/sorting/changing those CDs become ;)
Also if you want higher quality audio simply rip your CDs at a higher bit rate. I normally use 192kbit AAC.
