Blog posting droughts Jun11 '06
Every blogger knows what it’s like to not post for a long time. The funny part is, they don’t mean for this to happen - it just does.
The important part is how you react to "dry spells."
I think part of it occurs because of "set patterns in the mind."
Once you do something consecutively, it becomes much easier to continue that path, than it was to initially start that path. As a blogger, you’ve probably noticed months where you’ve posted dozens of entries - back to back, one after the other - with complete ease. Then, there are other months when you can barely break ten.
Whether you’re aware of it or not, your mind likes to move in a pattern - a rythym.
When you realize you haven’t posted in a few weeks, your mind takes that realization and forms a problem out of nothing.
It’s very much like when you wake up feeling like you’ve slept all night, only to discover an hour has passed, on the night before a big job interview. Panic insues, and although you would have normally fallen immediately back to sleep - it takes you much longer because now you are thinking about it.
This is the same as not posting to your blog for weeks, and then suddenly questioning your own desire.
The truth is the desire never leaves - it just takes new forms. The majority of the time, the desire is simply masked by doubt, apprehension, and anxiety. All of it needless.
So stop worrying about such things.
Oh, and if you succeed in doing so, let me know - because I sure as hell don't have the answers.
