The endless loop of organization Aug16 '06
I spend every day of my life trying to find the easiest way to get everything that’s in my head out of my head.
The endless swarming thoughts are often about work, life, priorities, ideas, etc. Anything that occupies a thought in my head, at any given time, needs to get out, and find a permanent home.
I try to organize every single aspect of my life - from my distant memories, to my web site’s expiration dates, to the specific beers I like. There is nothing in life that can’t be organized.
I struggle for a "be all, end all" approach at organization. I don’t know if one exists, but I sure like to think so.
In order to organize things, I use web notebook and to-do list services (Google Notebook / Ta-Da lists); word processing applications (Zoho Writer, Apple Pages); Calendars (Google Calendar, my Blackberry’s calendar); even plain old text documents saved to Box.net -- and still, this is not enough.
There is just so much to jot down - so many ideas, thoughts, progress - I wonder if the mess of notes is worth all of the effort.
Is it really making me more productive? Is it really helping me organize things?
Or is it a typical catch-22, where the tools used to organize require organization themselves?
Most days I feel somewhat defeated in my attempts at organization. I feel there is still so much junk from my head, still out there, still looking for a permanent home.
Am I crazy? Do I have obsessive compulsive disorder?
Or am I just obsessed with technology, and the web - to the point of chaos?
I am not looking for answers for those questions... rather, I am just trying to find a better way to organize the questions!
See the endless loop!?
