Twitter: the universal blog Jan17 '07
I've been getting involved with Twitter lately, and I find it very approachable. I can send messages whenever I feel the urge - and there's no excess involvement needed. I don't feel like it's a another distraction at all, simply because I only read messages on my cell phone, as opposed to the computer (when I'm trying to work).
Twitter allows you to set your own pace - send when you want, read when you want. It's a simple, universal network for you and your friends.
Since I use SMS quite a bit already, I am enjoying the freedom of communicating away from the computer.
I like to think of Twitter as a "universal blog," where messages are not sent to anyone in particular, rather, messages are sent to anyone listening - much like a blog.
But unlike a blog, I can send updates quickly and painlessly through SMS, the web, or even instant messenger. Whatever tool I'm currently using, I can update my "universal blog."
With Twitter, you send in what you're doing, what interests you, or whatever is on your mind - and your friends can all subscribe to it, much like an RSS feed.
SimpleBits and Daring Fireball (both frequent users of Twitter), offer their brief thoughts on the topic.
