This seems to be a new trend - creative error messages. It's a nice, polite, non-technical way of informing your audience that there is a site-wide problem.

I think that is a great idea. You should start the Flickr group yourself and be the administrator of the group. If the group becomes popular, people will start sending submissions in (or requesting membership in the Flickr group).
The Daily WTF for example will have this potpourri posts that I find hilarious about software bugs. The posts are driven by user submissions. For example:
