There is another way to add contacts: If you hover over the user's avatar, you'll see a frame surround it with a drop down arrow. If you click on the arrow, the first item you'll see in the menu is "Add [user] as a contact?"

True, it's still hidden, but at least you don't have to navigate to a separate page to add someone as a contact.
