Gmail "mute" feature not working? Dec10 '07

I love Gmail's ingenuity when it comes to understanding the needs of email users. When they offered the ability to mute conversations, the productivity side of me jumped for joy. Too often I'll be the recipient of endless email threads - those topics that you are only marginally involved with, yet you still get every response gleaming in your inbox.

This is usually the case when the initial email is sent to a group, and subsequent responses are also copied to the entire group, even though the "conversation" shifts between two people. This is an obvious example of overusing CC. If your response is geared specifically towards someone, just reply to them, and not the whole group. You'll save us all a lot of time.

Gmail's "mute" feature was supposed to solve this problem. The idea was to keep the message thread unread and searchable, but have it automatically skip the inbox.

It doesn't seem to function properly in all situations, though.

Here's an example screenshot of my inbox, which contains a muted item. Notice how it's still in the inbox.

Am I missing something here? I wish this would work properly because it's quite handy.
