My favorite 2007 music albums Dec14 '07

With the absence of my old "music" section, I don't write nearly enough about new music I hear. I wanted to make a short list of my favorite albums released in 2007. These are albums I recommend highly - if you're looking for fresh, new, fun sounds, pick any of these babies up. In no particular order, here they are.

"Afterwords" (Collective Soul)

A fresh and thoughtful blend of unconstrained pop rock, something the band never tires of creating. I've been a fan of Collective Soul since the early 90's, and their music hasn't really changed too much. For some bands, that would be a bad thing. Not for Collective Soul.

Standout tracks: Georgia Girl (10), Adored (11), Hollywood (8).

"Drastic Fantastic" (KT Tunstall)

Album cover art

Upbeat, charismatic rock with wonderful hints of "female power." KT (pronounced "Katie") Tunstall is just plain cool. She can really light up a crowd with her fast-paced songs, and yet still slow it down enough to prove she has a wide range of musical talent. Most guys I talk to have admitted to buying most of her albums, which says a lot for a young female pop-singer. In our society lead by scandalous female pop figures, making the news only for things unrelated to actual music, KT Tunstall is a breath of fresh air.

On track 9, Beauty of Uncertainty, you can really experience the depth of her musical talent. Closing my eyes, I can feel her standing next to me softly singing in my ear. It's absolutely mesmerizing.

"I've got a ticket for all that I lack. You might think that I'm gone for good, but I know that I'm coming back."

I can't wait to see how she evolves and grows as an artist.

Standout tracks: Little Favours (1), Hold On (5), Beauty of Uncertainty (9).

I also demonstrated how to play Little Favours on acoustic guitar.

"Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" (Spoon)

Album cover art

This album has to win, at least, for the most indecipherable title. Perhaps they wanted to sound like a baby?

The album itself, however, is perfectly understandable. You won't find two similar tracks on this album, and each one manages to surprise the listener with different instruments that arrive at unexpected times. I know I hear some trumpets or trombones in there. Maintaining this triumphant sound, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga showcases some creative beats and fluctuating tempos. It all comes together, though, for a positively upbeat sound.

"Wincing The Night Away" (The Shins)

Album cover art

The Shins effectively left the critics behind with Wincing The Night Away. This album is full of lush sounds and poppy rhythms. Left to choose between being grounded on Earth, or transcended outwardly, The Shins chose the latter.

"You're not obliged to swallow anything that you despise."

The overall sound is constructive and pleasantly appealing.

Standout tracks: Australia (2), Phantom Limb (4), Split Needles (9), A Comet Appears (11).

Honorable mention

The following albums are just as great - I simply didn't want to overload the reviews for one blog post:
