Drop.io for media sharing on the go Jan18 '08
I was tipped to Drop.io, and I like what I see.
The first thing that stood out is unrelated to using the service, but interesting anyway. The io domain extension comes from the British Indian Ocean Territory. Just a unique tidbit.
The service itself is a very simple way to host and share various types of media:
- Files
- Notes
- Links
- Audio recordings
- Pictures

You can be traditional and upload your files through the web interface, but who does that anymore? The great part about Drop.io is interacting while on the go.
Much like Utterz, Drop.io lets you post audio clips straight from your cell phone. When you create a unique Drop.io page (called a "drop"), you are provided a unique phone number. When you call the number, you are prompted to leave a message. Record whatever you'd like. Once you're done, it's saved to the web under your "drop" as an mp3 file.
Similar to SnapFoo, you can also post photos directly from your mobile device. Your "drop" is provided a unique email address. Attach photos to emails and send to that address. Moments later the photos appear on the web under your "drop."
You can make your "drop" public or private. Private "drops" require a password. Think of "drops" as your own personal space on the web to share or collaborate files.
Drop.io has a nice clean interface, free from ads and clutter.
