Fun interactive web services Jan21 '08

Since I don't feel like writing an individual blog post for each of these services, I've decided to include them all in a single post. These are services that I've been using a lot lately - some of them have been around for a while, some are new. Many of them combine audio, video, and mobile blogging.

Utterz

Quick description: Audio sharing in blog-like format. Include text, images to coincide with audio. Promote as podcast.

I use Utterz for recording my thoughts while on the go. I can call straight from my mobile phone. Forget voice recorders - Utterz posts your audio straight to the web, in public or private fashion. The blog-like interface makes Utterz a social network, and private Utterz are great for personal thoughts.

Utterz includes auto-posting to other social networks, such as Twitter, so when I record a public voice message, my Twitter account automatically updates with a link to the message.

SnapFoo

Quick description: Mobile photo-blogging, with auto-posting to other social networks like Twitter.

I use SnapFoo for sharing photos on the go. Using my mobile device, I can take a photo and email it to SnapFoo. My photo instantly appears on the web, and my Twitter account is updated with a link to the photo.

Drop.io

Quick description: Centralized media sharing. Non-social. Collaborative with a defined group of people.

Drop.io is a great way to collaborate with a defined group of people. It's not really a social network. You have to manually tell people to visit your "drop." Drops can be public or private, and can include files, audio recordings, links, and pictures. Content can be added from a desktop browser, or from a mobile device.

Pinger

Quick description: Voice-messaging between contacts. Quicker than traditional voicemail, acts more like text messaging.

Pinger is like text-messaging for voice. Traditional voicemail requires you alert the person first, by calling them. Maybe you'll get their voicemail, or maybe they'll pick up. Problem is - you may not want to talk to them directly. You just want to leave a quick voice message without having to call them. Leave a message with Pinger, which then alerts your contact via SMS, to which they can quickly dial in and listen to the message.

Send to multiple people at once, rather than making separate phone calls.

Quick, free, and non-intrusive - your recipients can react to your voice message on their own terms.

Tokbox

Quick description: Audio/Video conferencing via live streaming. Send video messages via email.

Save on that phone bill, and see the person you're talking to! All you need is a webcam and an internet connection. Perfect for conference calls where attendees are all in different locations. Add up to six members on a conference call.

You can also send video emails. Record yourself talking with your webcam, and instantly send it to a contact. Your recipient is provided a link to the video message on the web.
