What Apple TV should do Feb13 '08
Apple recently released the Apple TV "Take Two" update.
Apple TV has always intrigued me, but I've held off with purchasing one, for various reasons. The main reason is: I'm not quite sure it will do what I want it to do, and if, what it already does is worthwhile.
I have some new ideas of what I think a product like Apple TV should do:
Be able to access your entire iTunes library on your TV, in a Front Row like fashion, enabling you to demonstrate visually the contents of your iTunes library on a much larger screen, as well as take advantage of speakers connected to your TV (which are usually better than speakers connected to your computer). Imagine the entertainment possibilities. With company over, you could play music through your TV, while allowing listeners to "see" your collection - almost like a jukebox, but much prettier.
Be able to watch/listen to podcasts straight through your TV, and hey - since podcasts are just RSS feeds, why not have Apple TV retrieve any RSS feed, which can then be viewed straight from your TV? Imagine sitting down on your couch to read RSS feeds, rather than hunched over your computer. Various Flickr streams that I subscribe to via RSS would look brilliant on TV.
Anything involving multimedia (pictures, videos, etc) on the web should be allowed via Apple TV. Heck - bring the entire web to the TV screen!
Now, I'm pretty sure Apple TV currently supports bits and pieces of all these. To what extent - I'm not sure. Either way, I may be purchasing one soon, simply because the concept is exactly what people want. They want digital entertainment, and the web, brought to the living room.
As the iPhone has already demonstrated, the web is not just restricted to desktop computers - it's all around us, and it's just a matter of time before we see further emergence of the web into our lives.
Apple TV is a step in this direction.
