Flickr videos? Let's hope not Mar16 '08

A recent TechCrunch article assures readers that video support on Flickr is coming very soon.

Despite the fact that this coming from someone who doesn't even work for Yahoo, and insists on spilling speculative rumors, unfettered conclusions, and undocumented/unproven facts (leading to empty assurances), I still think his insight has some validity.

I am hoping he is wrong, though, because I would really hate to see Flickr littered with videos.

First of all, the market for video web services is practically absorbed by YouTube, and others. What niche would Flickr fill by adding support for videos?

Can you imagine if Flickr gets run-down with YouTube-like videos? It would be comparable to Photobucket at that point.

I'm sure Photobucket is a very useful service for those wishing to upload photos, videos, etc, but Flickr has a stronger sense of community surrounding it, with passionate creative artists and photographers using the service. These individuals, including myself, choose Flickr because of it's class, which includes uncluttered design, extensive functionality and usability, and it's ability to inspire.

Videos would damage that sanctity.

The only hope is that Flickr somehow integrates videos without losing it's true pride - that which is photos.
