Here, here. You've nailed it perfectly. I've been thinking for a long time about a "contacts" system that is portable from one application to another. Some software genius needs to create such a portable-and incredibly simple to use-contact plugin that simply, well, plugs in to whatever program you're using at the time such as gmail, outlook, facebook, whatever.

Of course, some work has to be done on getting all these proprietary providers to provide an open source connector for said genius to write to and that's where the problem will lie.
