Football weekly blame game Nov17 '08

One thing I can't stand about football (NFL, college) is the entire week off between games. It's far too much time for the media to over-analyze everything. In other sports, like baseball, basketball, and hockey - there are more frequent games played, so even after a crushing loss, it may only be two or three days at most before another game. A new game is like a new day - it's a chance for the team to redeem itself; to make things even again. This is also when the media "resets" itself. The less time to dwell on a loss, the better.

But for football, especially after tough losses (like the Chicago Bears are now experiencing) the media specifically tries to point the finger and find someone to blame. Newspapers, radio shows, and press conferences are all swirling with hard-nosed theories and perspectives from "expert" analysts, or just anyone wishing to chime in on the situation. In light of a couple bad losses, opinions are dire; expectations flattened.

Whom should we blame? Somebody must have caused us this misery. The head coach? The quarterback? It's gotta be someone!

Can't we just accept that the other team beat us, fair and square? That we didn't bring our best game; that the other team out-played us, out-hustled us, and just downright wanted to win more?

Why must we spend all of our time griping about the situation, when it's already been said and done? The game is over - there is no way to get it back. It's in the past. What's done is done.

Imagine you had a tough day at the office, and when you got home, you had to sit there and answer intrusive questions about your day's performance. You have reporters poking and prying at every detail, as if to make you re-live the entire experience. Is this something you'd enjoy? I think you'd prefer to go home and be left alone, perhaps to prepare for a better day tomorrow.

How are athletes any different than your average "Office Joe?" Sure, they're in the spotlight more often, and professionals make a lot of money, but neither of those reasons gives the public free reign to openly humiliate and criticize them, publish it in the papers, and talk endlessly about their "horrible" performance.

Please. Find something more productive to do with your time.
